What Is Sea Ranch?

Sea Ranch is a small town with a unique story in Sonoma County. From its conception in the 1960s, this planned community has been focused on creating a space dedicated to a deep sense of place and connection with the environment. Its inspiration to “live lightly on the land” was co-opted from the original Pomo native population of hunters and fishermen who inhabited this coastal stretch long before its eventual settlement. 

Its vision is so unique and so defined, that architecturally it has become known as the “Sea Ranch style” with simple timber frames inspired by farm dwellings, lots of natural light, and, in some cases, actual sod-covered roofs. The goal was for the structures to blend in seamlessly with the surroundings in order to promote a symbiotic lifestyle between its residents and the land.

Sea Ranch is a private community so, unless you stay at one of the homes–it is estimated that about half of the homes are vacation rentals–or stay at the Sea Ranch Lodge, the grounds are off-limits to visitors.  But if you are staying on the property, be prepared to be drawn to its rugged coastline, its miles of hiking trails, and its deep connection to nature. 

From the design of the houses, which are intended to feel molded into nature, to the conscious care of the land, there is nothing about Sea Ranch that is without purpose and intention.

Sea Ranch, California is on the northernmost strip of the Sonoma Coast. Let’s Talk About the Sea Ranch Lodge

Iconic and atypical, Sea Ranch Lodge is visually striking while being understated all at the same time. It was originally built to be the community center for the town—housing a post office, visitor center, and sales office. After the building of the community was completed, it transitioned into a hotel. 

The Sea Ranch Lodge closed to begin renovations in 2018 and its public spaces were recently reopened. Centered around communal areas such as a gift shop, cafe, bar, restaurant, and large covered porch, the lodge has become a vital staple to the Sea Ranch Community. The Dining Room, which is the restaurant, boasts farm-to-table fare that compliments the natural area and a sea view at all of its tables. There is also a store that sells specialty local merchandise and books in the area. 

There are plans to remodel and reopen the guest rooms by 2023. Until that point, there are plenty of vacation homes to rent in the area.

Additionally, when you stay in the community, you get access to the pools, hiking trails, and other communal areas that are normally reserved for residents.

Hirsch Vineyards – Open by appointment only, Hirsch Vineyards is the oldest grape-growing area on the West Sonoma coast. 

 

Outdoor Adventures

Whale Watching –  Head to Mendocino and enjoy a charter trip to whale watch. 

River Rafting – For the more adventurous groups, consider rafting or kayaking down the Gualala River with Adventure Rents. 

Beach Day – Enjoy a beach day complete with a picnic and watching some surfing. One of the most famous beaches in the area is Blackpoint Beach which is known for its great surf.
